    GRSA Introduces Newest Quartet
    by Janet Mason

Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines (GRSA) is delighted to introduce our newest quartet, Tickled Pink! This enthusiastic new group features Clare Cunningham - Lead, Sue Kuzee - Bass, Wendy Meyers - Baritone, and Stephanie Sherman - Tenor.  This is the first time all four singers have performed together in a barbershop quartet.  Although, they have only been singing as a group for a few short months – music has been a constant presence in each of their lives.

Wendy Meyers, the quartet’s barbershop veteran, joined the Grand Rapids Chorus in 2019. Her musical journey began early, singing with her family at the age of three. By age five, she was singing harmony and performing regularly at area churches. Wendy recalls how Tickled Pink came together: “We did a quartet exercise in chorus, and Clare and I were paired up. We sounded good and thought, ‘Oooh… maybe we should do this!’”

Clare Cunningham, the newest GRSA member, joined the chorus in 2024. Her musical background includes piano and flute, and while she sang in a community choir during college, she didn’t fully see herself as a singer back then: “I didn’t consider myself a singer until I came to the Grand Rapids Chorus, with all the new things to learn like choreography.”

Sue Kuzee has been singing since junior high school and has participated in both high school and church choirs over the years. Quartet singing, she says, offers a unique challenge and reward: “It allows us to take ownership of the music, deepen our listening skills, and create a special bond that only comes from singing closely with three other people.”

Stephanie Sherman brings experience from high school show choirs and church choirs. For those considering quartet singing, she offers encouragement: “Give yourselves some grace! There is so much to learn that it can feel overwhelming at times and shake your confidence. Just remember, it’s a journey and it takes time.”

Together, these four singers are embracing the joy, challenge, and connection of barbershop harmony, and GRSA couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tickled Pink to the stage.

Two Members Join an Elite SAI Group
    by Janet Mason

Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines (GRSA) is proud to announce that two of our Members have passed the Sweet Adelines International Director Certification Program (DCP). Our new Director, Holli Houtz, is now a Certiffied Director.  She passed the Program in only six months, which is unusually fast. GRSA Visual Coordinator, Pattee Bender, earned an Approved Director certificate.  Chorus Team Coordinator, Sue Kuzee, gave Holli and Pattee their certificates at Monday Night’s rehearsal.
The Director Certification Program is an educational, self-paced program, designed to provide opportunities to validate the skills and knowledge required to direct a Sweet Adelines chorus.  The DCP certification is awarded to directors, assistant directors, section leaders or anyone wanting a better understanding of our barbershop art form after passing 10 evaluations. Most of the evaluations are written, one is by observation, and there are 4 surveys from chorus members.

Congratulations to our super stars Holli and Pattee.

Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines Names New Director
    By Colleen Pierson

After a year-long nationwide search, Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines (GRSA) is proud and excited to name Lansing resident Holli Houtz as its new director.

“I am just elated and excited to learn this great news,” Houtz enthused.  “It was a long time coming as GRSA’ s search was very thorough and intensive. I didn’t want to get my hopes up.  It is just so amazing to get this position.”
Holli grew up with a passion for barbershop surrounding her as numerous relatives, including her parents and grandparents, have been involved for decades.

“I first went onstage when I was five years old,” she explained.  “For family vacations we went to barbershop events.  My love and passion of barbershop, singing with family members, and community has always been very happy times for me.”

Houtz’s resume lists her mission statement: “I love working with motivated individuals who want to make beautiful and artistic music. There is nothing better than the joy and community created by singing together.  Singing is my passion and supporting and encouraging others on their musical journey is my mission.”

She is a graduate of Western Michigan University majoring in Choral/General Music Education. Holli is proficient as a music educator, director, and gifted performer. She also has her own business producing learning tracks. While at WMU, her membership in the internationally regarded vocal jazz ensemble, The Gold Company, came with winning the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation competition.

But that’s not all. She is a champion with Cosmic quartet in the Rising Star Division (under age 26) of Sweet Adelines International (SAI). She is a SAI regional Champion with Girl Talk quartet, which includes her mother. Girl Talk is also the reigning district quartet champion in the Pioneer District of the Barbershop Harmony Society. She co-directs a gender inclusive chorus named MI-X based in southeast Michigan. Holli also enjoys spending quality time with her husband Jonah Houtz, (who is of course) a barbershop singer, and they are the happy owners of three cats and a dog.

Holli Houtz hopes to take the Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines to new levels. “At upcoming contests, I want to knock some socks off,” she said gleefully. “I can’t wait to form connections and trust with the group and find out where they want to go.”

Team Leader Sue Kuzee agrees: “Holli’s election as our chorus director marks a significant moment for us.  She embodies the passion, talents and vision necessary for our growth. Her leadership is sure to elevate our musical abilities and inspire each of us to reach our full potential.  As we look forward to a bright and harmonious future, we’re excited to embark on this new journey together under her guidance.”

This award recognizes her exceptional leadership, commitment, service, creativity, talents and cooperation for her remarkable contribution to the chorus.

GRSA Wins Two Medals in Singing Contest
    By Janet Mason

Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines (GRSA) took home two medals at the Sweet Adelines – Great Lakes Harmony Region 17 contest in Cleveland this past weekend. GRSA won 3rd Place Division AA (mid-size choruses) and 4th Place Overall.

This was Interim Director, Judy Westers, first time on the contest stage as the Music Director. “Our dream came true on that stage because we worked so hard to be prepared and that gave our singers so much confidence on the contest stage,” said Westers.  “I couldn't be more proud of this chorus for what we accomplished. The bonus was that our audience loved the performance!”  Westers also performed, as a baritone, with an all-GRSA Quartet, Chime In, at the Sweet Adelines contest in Cleveland.

The chorus sang two Disney songs “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “Almost There.”  The Chorus is fortunate to have an “in-house” music arranger, Penny Hock, who adapted both songs for GRSA.   “It is a privilege to be the in-house arranger and be able to adapt an arrangement to fit us perfectively,” said Hock.  “It’s the chorus singers who adapt and evolve constantly, until they create the pulse and breathe life into it.”  Hock is also the Assistant Director and a Lead for the Chorus.

GRSA is an energetic A Cappella chorus of nearly 60 women, who perform 4-part harmony in the barbershop style of music.  The Chorus has entertained countless audiences across West Michigan and overseas in the Netherlands, Italy, and France.  GRSA will be performing in Ireland and Northern Ireland this Fall.

Penny Hock Promoted to Assistant Director
    By Colleen Pierson

Talents are Meant to be Shared. In the course of her lengthy musical history, Penny Hock has been an arranger, accompanist, choreographer, section leader, director, teacher, accomplished musician and a gifted performer. She will now continue to share all of her talents with the Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines in the role of Assistant Director.

"I am privileged and feel a great sense of honor in being named to this position," Penny said excitedly.

We are honored to have her in our chorus. Her qualifications are lengthy and impressive. 50 years of vocal performance, 15 years of classical piano instruction as well as woodwind, percussion instruction and serving as a vocal instructor. Penny has been a member of Melodeers Chorus, Choral-Aires Chorus, Spring Valley Chorus and served as an SAl approved music  arranger under the mentorship of David Wright.

She began her extensive musical background beginning at the age of five when she sang during Christmas with her dad's band at an orphanage in Saginaw, MI.  "I play multiple instruments and started teaching piano when I was in high school, and beyond high school started teaching voice, oboe, percussive accessories, rhythm, and adult education at Franciscan Rhythms," she explained.

"My exposure to Sweet Adeline's began in 1979 when my mother joined the Tri-City chorus in the east side of the state. She sings bass so I learned several songs in bass, the first of which being 'How We Sang Today' and I still sing it in bass as a tribute to her," she reflected. The enthusiastic Penny, after enough begging, was allowed to tag along with her mom and soon after that began her Sweet Adeline career as a feature dancer on the annual show until she was 14 and then was allowed to officially join the chorus.

Penny left the organization for a stretch after high school and landed in Grand Rapids in 1994.
"I was in and out of chorus with work, school, and life and eventually, our director Ann Jarchow made me Assistant Director alongside Judy Westers. The three of us formed her Director's Resource Team, and Judy Westers and I became musical soul mates, and the creating started, and a whole new world of Sweet Adeline's opened up, and the possibilities seemed endless. 30 years later, they still do," she said emotionally.

In a jam-packed musical career, choosing a highlight may be difficult, but this one came to mind readily: "Singing with the Melodeers chorus was a surreal highlight of my Sweet Adelines career, for I had the privilege of singing on stage with my mom in Baltimore and walking away with a gold medal. To be able to experience that with my mom, the one who laid the path for me, is beyond what any words can convey. I am so humbled to have been taught by her and now all these years later to be the one doing the teaching, and she encourages me with every step."  Penny’s mom, Judy Herrick, is a Bass Leader for Grand Rapids Chorus.

I have belonged to three high-level choruses, but my Sweet Adeline home will always be Grand Rapids, for it is here that my foundation was built and I realized all that SA has to offer. And now I am an approved arranger, coach, teacher, section leader, former regional leader, and once again Assistant Director. To say it is an honor is an understatement."

When she's not singing - when does that ever happen? Penny Hock is an SIU Fraud Investigator, a cargo inspector, and the owner of a wedding business called The Penny Loafer.

What an amazing evening we had on June 20th singing at the Frederik Meijer Gardens’ Tuesday Evening Music Club concert series.  Beautiful setting, wonderful acoustics, and a large enthusiastic crowd.  We taught them our hand jive and other fun hand gestures.  They eagerly sang along to their favorite songs.  The kids dancing, in front of the stage, were fun to watch.  We really appreciated the standing ovation and encore request!  A very special evening, we will remember for years to come.

The Joy of Singing and Puzzling

    by Janet Mason

Wendy Meyers is a Bass for the Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines.  Besides singing, she enjoys putting together jigsaw puzzles.  She and her husband, Jeff, are puzzlers.  They have done countless puzzles over the past 40 years. The couple just got done with a puzzle that any Sweet Adeline would enjoy. It’s a jigsaw puzzle of Edna Mae Anderson.  If you know your Sweet Adelines history, then you know Edna founded our organization back in 1945 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Jeff’s brother, Dan, found the jigsaw puzzle in a Virginia thrift shop for $4.  It was unopened, so it was in perfect condition.  “I do the easy stuff and Jeff does the hard parts,” said Wendy. The couple did many puzzles during the Covid pandemic.  Now they are both working again, so they don’t have a lot of time to put the pieces together.  Wendy says, “it was easier than I thought, it only took us three evenings.”

There are 500 pieces in the Edna Mae Anderson jigsaw puzzle.  If you look closely at the pieces, you will notice photographs of choruses, quartets, and chorus logos with names, such as Harmony River, Sound of Sunshine, and Mountain Jubilee, which are still ringing chords today.  Wendy guesses Sweet Adelines International sponsored the puzzle to honor its founder and choruses.  These puzzlers are glad that this special puzzlefound its way in the Meyers household.

    Singers Wanted – Singers Came

    By Janet Mason

Grand Rapids, MI – February 6, 2023.  Our last Guest Night was more than three years ago.  The Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines didn’t feel comfortable opening up its rehearsals, while Covid-19 was circulating through our community.  We decided early 2023 would be the right time for a Singers Wanted Guest Night. We promoted the event on Facebook, with some beautiful messages, and our members reached out to their family and friends.  As February 6th approached we wondered – would anyone show up?

We were delighted when 19 women and girls joined us on the risers.  It was a multi-generational turnout, according to Membership Co-chair Sue Kuzee.  “It was nice to see two high school girls come with their grandmother, the college age babysitter for one of our members, and the middle schooler who came to support her Mom,” said Kuzee.

We look forward to them joining us on the risers as they move through our audition process.

The Grand Rapids Chorus had a memorable evening singing at Christmas Cabaret at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in West Michigan on December 1. We sang our favorite Christmas and Chanukah songs and were joined by several of our quartets, including Java Jive/Fanfare, Joy Ride, and our newest quartet West Blend.  Sashay, a quartet from Traverse City, also added their beautiful voices to our performance.

We sang in the new Garden Pavilion surrounded by the marble faces of Utopia by Spanish Artist Jaume Plensa.  Meijer Gardens transforms into a magical place for the holiday season with thousands of lights adorning Christmas trees and intriguing culture displays. It was an honor to help kick-off the holiday season in such a special way.

Grand Rapids Chorus Braves Snow Storm
November 19, 2022 - These 40 brave souls didn’t let 17-23 inches of lake-effect snow get in the way of an all-day coaching session. Some of our singers came from as far away as Gaylord and Traverse City in northern Lower Michigan. What dedication! It was amazing what we accomplished in one-day with coaches Steve and Renee Tramack. We look forward to working with them again in January and  beyond. Education is a priority for the Grand Rapids Chorus Sweet Adelines.

We also got to hear our newest quartet sing. They WOWED us! Meet West Blend - Judy Westers (Bari), Sonja Acosta (Lead). Colleen Pierson (Tenor) and Leah Williams (Bass).

The chorus likes to have fun.  We were entertained when four of our fellow singers played a game called Shake-it-Off. The game involved a tissue box and a bunch of small balls.  The goal - be the first one to shake all the balls onto the floor.  What a hoot!

Grand Rapids Chorus is part of Sweet Adelines International. We invite you to visit our rehearsals on Mondays at 7pm. Click here for more informatioin.
