About Grand Rapids Sweet Adelines

About Us

Grand Rapids Sweet Adelines is a membership organization of female singers, who meet regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun. We currently have over 60 singers of all ages, all walks of life, and all parts of the Greater Grand Rapids area. This fantastic chorus has been reaching audiences in Michigan and all over the world since 1951.

GRSA is an entity of Sweet Adeline's International, which is a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barber shop harmony through education and performances.

As of May 1, 2013, GRSA is of Great Lakes Harmony Region 17, which covers southern Michigan, northeastern Indiana, northern Ohio and a small piece of northwestern Pennsylvania. Local chapters include Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Plainwell, Coldwater and Muskegon

The main purpose of Grand Rapids Sweet Adelines is to get out and sing for our community. We sing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at an annual competitions. We are available to sing at your next function or event. The Grand Rapids Chorus continues to be a favorite source of entertainment, this has been especially true during the winter when they perform their annual holiday show (No holiday show in 2021 due to Covid-19).
If you're looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Book Us section. As of the fall of 2021 - we are performing in the community again!

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

In the spring of every year, Grand Rapids Sweet Adelines participates Sweet Adelines' regional competitions. Now that we are in Region 17, we travel east to Cleveland to compete against our sister choruses in the region. Click here to learn more. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. There is hope that conpetitions will be held again in 2022.  The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. Click here to learn more.

Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. Grand Rapids Sweet Adelines currently is home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them! Click here to see our quartet section to learn more about them.
